>The Future of Gaming? God Help Us All…..

>

*Sigh* I get worried…. all this effort to bring motion-control to these “casual” gamers that don’t really even like games in the first place. Now let me make this clear, when I say casual, I am talking about the people who only only like simple games and play for a less than 5 hours a week (approx)….yeah you know the kind I am talking about. Anyways I guess I should explain myself.

As you know, and if you don’t you’ve been living under a rock, Sony and Microsoft are prepared to debut their versions of motion control . In a few days at E3 we expect to see the final versions of said products and set a price point. These are the Playstation Move, and Project Natal. Now sure, from a financial perspective, it’s a smart move to try to tap into the casual market, but what does that mean for us, the “hardcore” crowd? My prediction… not good.

Yeah they can still produce games targeted to us, but given the amount of money pumped into the motion control products, it would be hard to imagine that they won’t try to use them as a gimmick to sell said games. So why exactly is that a bad thing? Well for starters, it will generally mean we will get a watered down game that just isn’t what we were hoping for. So as an example well talk about the new Socom game. Yeah it looks great from the little we’ve seen, Sony has told us that the game is designed to be used with either a controller or the move. Let’s, for the sake of argument, say we get our hands on it and its absolute garbage because they had the gimmicky motion control built in. Let’s hope I am wrong but it is a very real possibility. Anyways before I go on rambling for too long let me talk a bit about the specific products.

Project Natal has been unofficially announced to sell at $150, so it may change. I personally think this is THE WORST of the three motion controllers… er if you can call it that (as it doesn’t have any controllers). I respect what Microsoft is trying to accomplish with this and to be honest it’s pretty cool but I don’t really want to see this in my games. They want us to feel like we are truly in the game.. when in fact I can’t imagine a way to be further detached. What I mean is, let’s use that racing gameplay we’ve all seen a million times, they show us that we can hold our hands around an invisible steering wheel. See this doesn’t work properly, if I want to feel like I really AM in the game, then I will just plug in my steering wheel and call it a day.

There’s no way to make you feel like you are really racing then to hold a steering wheel with feedback and rumble. Now they are showing us this rafting game or whatever…you get to flap around like an idiot just like those people from Parade Magazine….yeah thats what I want to do when I play a game. As for FPS I do not really want to stand around and hold a virtual gun until my arms ache, nor do I want railshooters. Well I guess we will have to wait to see what games come out for it, maybe it will be great, but I don’t imagine it will. I am disappointed Microsoft, you once touted your systems as being an “adult” gaming experience, with controllers designed for the hands of adults and mature oriented games. I must be honest I felt this was the case up until the whole NXE revamp. I mean childish looking avatars…really guys!? The whole feel of the system feels geared towards younger kids now. But I am getting off track.

Playstation Move is rumored to have a similar~ish price point to Natal but may be considerably cheaper. Sony is saying that we need not worry, that this will not become a staple for the PS3 and will merely be an option, let’s hope they hold true to those words. Yeah this may have the greatest potential out of any of these controllers, but I can’t imagine anything but shitty Wii-type games coming out with just a graphical overhaul. Really I don’t have a whole lot to say about it, just that unless there is something truly amazing that comes out that utilizes it, I wont buy. And no that hideous looking fighting game they keep showing is not going to do the trick.

Wii, I give credit to them for being the first people to implement the motion control for their game. Let’s be honest here, sure there are a few games that would only work on the Wii but for the most part every game you play on it feels like it would be much more fun using a controller. Games like Trauma Center would never be possible on a controller, but games like the upcoming Xenoblade should be on another console.

Let’s hope that these fail so we can get back to real gaming, because if they prove to be more successful than games we have now….god help us all…[good] gaming will be dead.
